The town of Altrincham lies within the Metropolitan Borough of Trafford and is part of the Greater Manchester county. Just a few miles south of central Manchester, there is plenty of leisure and business offerings across the area, meaning that a consistent crowd of commuters use the station on a daily basis.

The station is managed by Northern Rail and runs services to Chester and Manchester. Altrincham is also the final stop on the Manchester Metrolink system, which operates trams from the mainline train station into central Manchester and through to Bury, Ashton and Rochdale.
